¿Que he aprendido de trabajar informando a la comunidad inmigrante?
Que a veces en es un reto tratar de llevar información a mucha gente, aun haciendo publicaciones en Facebook o en otros medios, ya que la mayoría de la comunidad latina trabaja todo el tiempo y nunca están al pendiente de eventos o información que queremos brindarles y la razón es porque están trabajando todo el tiempo. Una manera que he encontrado útil para hacerles llegar la información es: Yendo a llevarles la información a sus casas o a sus áreas de trabajo. También he aprendido que en la comunidad inmigrante es muy importante tener comida en los eventos, porque de esta manera resulta más atractivo para ellos y tener cuidado para niños, de no ser así, es muy difícil para ellos puedan asistir.
Algo muy bonito de la comunidad inmigrante es, que aunque nuestros servicios son gratis para ellos, ellos quieren pagarte con una comida o un detalle y eso me gusta, porque quiere decir que ellos se sienten agradecidos y valoran el trabajo que hacemos por ellos, lo cual me llena de satisfacción.
¿Que he aprendido sobre hacer trabajos sin fines de lucro para la comunidad?
Creo que el trabajar para una compañía sin fines de lucro es muy bonito, he aprendido muchísimo y lo que más me apasiona de todo esto es; ver todo lo que las becas pueden hacer para ayudar a la comunidad en general a tener una mejor calidad de vida y a tratar de reducir las brechas que existen, así como el gran trabajo de equipo que se lleva a cabo en la organización para conseguir estas metas.
What have I learned from working to better inform the immigrant community?
Sometimes it is a challenge just trying to inform people, even though Facebook or other media since most of the Latino community works all the time and they are never on the lookout for events or information we feel may be important to them. Again, many immigrants are working most of the time. One way I have found it useful to get you the information is going out into the community to bring the information to their homes or areas of work. I have also learned that in the immigrant community it is very important to have food at our events. This makes events more attractive for folks from the immigrant community, as does providing childcare. Without these, it is very difficult for them to be able to attend.
Something very nice about the immigrant community is that although our services are free for them, they often want to pay staff with a meal or a small gesture like a gift, and I like that. To me, it means that they feel grateful and value the work we do for them, which fills me with satisfaction.
What have I learned about doing non-profit jobs for the community?
I think working for a non-profit is very nice, I have learned a lot and what I love most about it is seeing what grant monies can do to help the community in general to have a better quality of life and to try to reduce the gaps that exist. I also appreciate the great teamwork within the organization to achieve these goals.
